Robert and Elizabeth walked into EIS with red faces, toting their two-year-daughter, Emily. In the ninety-degree weather, the two-block walk from the homeless shelter seemed much further than it was. After both parents lost their jobs through a series of unfortunate events, they could no longer afford rent and their apartment complex had immediately evicted them. Now, they had to spend their summer in the shelter among twenty-two other families with small children. Today, they just needed diapers and a stroller. Their walk back seemed much shorter with Emily in a stroller and the peace of mind that they could keep her clean. They left with smiles ear-to-ear and expressed their thank-yous for something simple to most. They hoped that this was the start of their journey back to the life they had once lead.
